THE LAW OF GRAVITATION (October 31, 1982)
Not long ago our son returned from school delighted and eager to tell us a story he had heard from his teacher. After dinner, we sat on his bed and listened. He brought an apple and a knife from the kitchen, and placed them by his side. The story was long and rather predictable. Once upon a time there was a little girl who set out to find a magic apple. This apple had a star in it. The girl and her numerous helpers finally found the apple, and presented it to the king. Our storyteller then revealed his secret: his face beaming, he cut the apple-laterally. And, behold, there appeared a pentangular star! Both of us found this revelation exquisite, as we had not witnessed the lateral section ever before, and the three of us laughed joyously for a while. Our son was euphoric. We felt closer than usual. Sir Isaac Newton came to my mind only a couple of days later.
