“OLD AGE IS OVER!” (October 4, 2019)
Thus the stark slogan on the front page of the so-called longevity issue of The MIT Technology Review for September and October, which I just received by snail mail. The subtitle is tiny but perplexing, though: “If you want it.” The issue is teeming with articles that cannot but entice the babyboomers, who are now dominating the populations of the rich world, including the States. “Get ready for first anti-aging drugs,” blares one. “Design for seniors that doesn’t suck,” goes another. “A visit with immortality’s true believers,” trumpets the third. Amazingly, not a single article mentions climate change and environmental degradation, as well as wars that cannot but follow the twain. For the years to come are not very likely to entice wishes for anti-aging, let alone immortality. Whence the clever subtitle on the front page, I guess. In a decade or two, it is bound to become a joke. And a hilarious one, no less. Indeed, old age is nothing if not a heavenly gift at this day and age.
