FEARING FOR GRETA THUNBERG (December 27, 2019)

Greta Thunberg is everywhere nowadays. Wherever one casts one’s glance, her face pops up. And I find it quite endearing, too. I agree with her that the world is facing calamity of unprecedented proportions, as well as that politicians should start listening to scientists, but I am rather dubious about her belief that climate change and environmental degradation can be stopped, let alone reversed by any peaceful means. All she will eventually achieve is to make youngsters like her get angrier and angrier as disasters keep piling up around the globe. And they are piling up for true. In my mind, disaster management is the only option available, but she would most likely dismiss my argument without much ado.

Chances are that all that Greta will bring to this world is an ever-greater number of protests, demonstrations, and uprisings. Youngsters like her will reject any other option, anyway. And they will get ever more violent in their quest for a better world—that is, the world they believe they deserve. Sooner or later, they will attack every grownup in sight, not to mention the elderly. In their minds, the living are squarely behind all the troubles with climate and toxic waste of all descriptions. But their ire will get them nowhere. And fast. If anything, the youngsters will only make the world a more dreadful place for all the living.

In addition, I fear for Greta herself. Now that she is in focus of so many people from every continent, she will end up the target of both love and hate. Some will follow her like a saint while the others will chase her away like a devil’s sidekick. Alas, humans are slaves of their emotions! In the end, Greta’s life will be in question. Every imaginable trick will be used to get her out of the way. Given her notoriety, which is unprecedented for her tender age, it is hard to imagine that she will keep thriving for too long. Fearing for her, I could not but jot down my thoughts about things to come. I can only hope that she will understand her own predicament before she reaches a point of no return. Fingers crossed.
