INDEED EMBARRASSING (October 22, 2019)

The browser on the desktop computer in my study never ceases to amuse me. Time after time, it apologizes for outages in the power supply, which have nothing whatsoever to do with the browser itself (“Well, This is Embarrassing!” May 30, 2014). In fact, it is the company providing electric power in Istria that should be apologizing, and profusely. Which it never does, it goes without saying. At any rate, outages are getting more and more frequent with ever more common storms that pound the peninsula. But the power company is doing nothing to adjust to the changing climate. They let it rip as it pleases. And this is why the browser’s apology now pops up on the screen of my desktop four or five times a week, if not more often. Each and every time this happens, I swear out loud at the colossal incompetence of Istrians, as well as all other Croatians. Tourism is their main source of income, but they cannot figure out the link between this felicitous industry and the basic infrastructure that makes it tick (“Electricity + Water = Tourism,” March 24, 2011). All the leading politicians on the Istrian peninsula can talk about is its insuperable likeness to Tuscany (“New Fucking Tuscany,” July 15, 2010; “New Fucking Tuscany, Again,” September 24, 2013; and “New Fucking Tuscany, Again and Again,” March 30, 2016). The basic infrastructure remains beyond their ken, though. To be a bit more precise, it remains beyond their comprehension. Well, this is indeed embarrassing!
