PLUCKING QUOTATIONS LEFT AND RIGHT (September 17, 2019)
It often crosses my mind that my haiku of one-hundred and sixty characters may crowd out all other writings in due time. Which is why I sometimes call them my sutras (“My Sutras,” January 27, 2011). Things may turn out rather different, though. Lately, I pluck ever more quotes from my favorite books. As years go by, they may well crowd out everything else in my book. Which reminds me of Walter Benjamin and his ideal of producing a work consisting entirely of quotations (Addendum I of December 22, 1978, to “On Meta-Literature,” December 21, 1978). The very thought brings joy to my heart. Hey, my youth is far from lost! As a matter of fact, it is staring right into my face as I write. Plucking quotations left and right is a pursuit of great vintage, anyway. And my Residua is a bona fide commonplace book, as I have established long ago (“A Commonplace Book,” October 17, 2005). To my delight, my youth is grinning at me by now…
