AMUSING (September 1, 2000)
It is amusing to observe that the critique of art as such, or art as an area of human endeavor, is in the domain of philosophers rather than art critics, that is, critics of other people’s art, as well as critics of critics of other people’s art. Twice removed from their subject, innocent of both philosophy and art, art critics are reduced to following each other. The amusing bit is not that the blind are leading the blind, nor that the general public is following this spectacle instead of listening to philosophers and artists, but that artists themselves are bamboozled by the art critics into believing that there is something to learn from their prattle. As the Arab saying goes: “Dogs bark, the caravan passes by.”
