BRICE MARDEN AT SERPENTINE GALLERY (November 19, 2000)

Most painters are better at drawing than painting, and most drawings are closer to the bone than paintings, but it is surprising that this is also true of Brice Marden, whose paintings can be thought of as colored drawings. As soon as he departs from black and white, and possibly also red, as well, he veers toward the decorative. One cannot but surmise that this is not Marden’s own fault, but that of painting itself. And maybe that of color, too.
