CHATTERING AWAY (December 8, 2000)

It is blustery this morning. As I enter the Reading University campus, I see a magpie on the path right in front of me. Startled, it braves the rough wind and lands on top of a lamppost. Just as it grabs hold of the lamp’s neck, the light is turned off. The same happens with all the lamps in sight. According to some sensor somewhere, it is light enough already. Startled again, the poor magpie flutters to a nearby tree. Buffeted by the wind, it struggles to the new perch. Now it is chattering away in indignation.
