COUNTRY AND WESTERN (December 5, 2000)

I am listening to Country and Western Christmas songs while I am waiting for my meal in an Indian restaurant in Reading. The syrupy strains are clearly meant to please the patrons, but it is not unlikely that the owners and their helpers appreciate them, too. Minus the incomprehensible Christian lyrics, that is. But the content, the substance, the essence, is always the least pressing thing—or, perhaps, the most fleeting.
