GOOD VIBRATIONS (November 16, 2000)

Playing the Jew’s harp makes me feel good, serene, whole, one with the world. I wonder why. Perhaps the vibrations the ancient instrument produces in the skull are akin to those produced by the throat in Tibetan chanting, for instance. Like the Jew’s harp, the good old “om” or “aum” may be from the same family of devices that our ancestors discovered in their tireless search for the best way to appease our brains. As is often the case, the content associated with these devices is suspect, whereas the form—in this case, the frequency of good vibrations—is of the essence.
