ON SOME ADVANTAGES OF MODERN MATERIALS (October 13, 2000)

At the intersection of Westbourne Grove and Hereford Road, just outside Café Nero, a bouquet of flowers wrapped in cellophane is taped onto a no-parking signpost. Red roses. According to a note attached to the bouquet, someone has died at that spot a year earlier. A traffic accident, presumably. After a couple of weeks on the post, exposed to the weather, the roses have become unrecognizable, but the cellophane wrapping is as good as new. Modern materials do have their advantages, after all.
