TALKING QUIETLY (November 13, 2000)
Two middle-aged people sitting not far from my table in a small café and talking quietly in a Central- or East-European tongue. One of the reasons I cannot be sure about the tongue, let alone about what they are saying, is that most of the time they talk at the same time. It is enough for one of them to start a sentence for the other to join in. I cannot even tell whether they are gently arguing or emphatically agreeing with each other, but it is clear that they are very, very close.
