THE “PRODUCTIVE” HALF (December 4, 2000)
With the help of a camera hidden in a make-believe boulder on wheels, David Attenborough probed last night into the most intimate moments of a pride of lions. The show purported to shed light on the way lion cubs are brought up. Although the film briefly shows a fierce fight between the male lion currently heading the pride and a pair of male intruders, it sheds no light whatsoever on the way male lions are brought up. By the way, at least one of the cubs filmed was male, as witnessed by several shots from behind. The exclusive emphasis on hunting, the domain of the lionesses, only exposes the contemporary bias toward women—the “productive” half of the human species. By implication, like male lions, a bunch of gluttonous and short-tempered lazy-bones, men are only an aberration of nature.
