THIS TIME (November 14, 2000)

“You won’t believe what happened to me today!” declared my mother as soon as she saw me upon my return from London. “What happened?” I asked, seeing that it could not have been all that bad. “I myself cannot believe what happened to me!” she continued. “Mother,” I asked again, “what happened?!” “Well,” she said at last, “I went out with two different shoes!” She looked at me, her arms akimbo. “Not only that,” she raised her index finger, “I wore two right shoes!!!” To top it off, she noticed all this only when she returned home. She was really distraught, but I just laughed and laughed. This time she did not join me, though. “A woman like me…,” she said quietly.
