A SMALL SMILE ONLY (June 4, 2007)

I am sitting on the terrace at Klaudio’s with Andreas Dussmann, his girlfriend Betty Girma, and Kristina Šimun, who works in their real estate office on Gradiziol. Andreas and Betty came to Motovun from Munich and now live here most of the year. At some point a bunch of kids on a school excursion come to the lower square. Around eight or nine years old, they look kind of provincial. Later on we learn that they are from Zagorje, half way between Zagreb and Ljubljana. I soon notice that all the kids are staring at me. A bunch of them even sit at the neighboring table to get a better view. Only then I realize they are actually staring at Betty, who is Ethiopian. As I am sitting closest to her, they are staring at me, too. The kids are trying to figure out how we are related. When I report all this to our table, Andreas and Kristina laugh, but Betty cracks a small smile only. She must be used to being stared at in Motovun.
