AN EYE FOR THE ENEMY (May 10, 2007)

I have been puzzled for weeks by the holes on the leaves of the creeper on my terrace. Something has been feasting on the leaves, but what? I assumed it was an insect. I could not see any insect on the creeper, though. At long last, yesterday I spotted the enemy. It is a tiny snail, whose round and flat shell is at most the size of the nail on the little finger. I found scores of them. They had crept all the way to the top of the creeper, too. I picked them one by one and tossed them into the garden below the terrace. Let them feast on something else. As I went along, I became ever better at spotting the little rascals. This morning I picked a few more of them. Now that I have an eye for the enemy, its days are numbered. What I find amazing about all this is that the snails were always there, munching away. I could not see them because I was not looking for them.
