Although it has rained recently in much of Croatia, it has not rained much. According to today’s issue of a leading Croatian newspaper, drought is still a very serious worry across the land. Many of the essential crops, such as wheat and corn, will be decimated. The newspaper goes on to say that drought threatens much of Europe, too. And all this appears in a small article with a puny title buried deep in the issue. Judging from the rest of the newspaper, the title of this size and the placement of the article go together with minor news of local character. Among the major news, appearing on the front page, there is something the selector of the Croatian football team had said at a press conference yesterday. Of course, I am not bitching about this particular newspaper or about Croatian newspapers in general. The subject of drought doubtless gets the same amount of coverage in the rest of Europe. Or anyplace else around the globe, for that matter. Instead, I am bitching about the human species. We are cleverer than monkeys and dolphins. Some feat.
