COOL BRITANNIA: A LETTER TO THE JACKDAW (May 28, 2007)

Your editorial masterfully brings to light the many threads that link Tony Blair and the contemporary art scene in Britain (“Things Can Only Get Better,” No. 69, June 2007). Indeed, much of the spin that connects the two can be summed up by Blair’s inaugural slogan: Cool Britannia. Although it lost its luster soon after it was spun, the slogan clearly showed that art was well within Blair’s vision of the new and glorious order. But this is as far as I would go in agreeing with your optimistic assessment of the future. It is good to remember that the fusion of art, entertainment, and fashion was hatched long before Blair. He only skillfully exploited it to his advantage. Which is why I very much doubt that things will get better after his departure. Far from it. The fusion will flourish long after Blair, too. In fact, his slogan is quite likely to remain one of his lasting contributions to art as it has come to be. Cool Britannia all the way to hell.
