FAMILIAR FACES (May 1, 2007)

Motovun is overrun by tourists. It is May Day, and the weather is just right for a little outing. Some of the thousands from Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, and Austria that are milling about Istria today have crawled up our hill and plopped themselves all over our little town. They are everywhere. Cafés and restaurants are packed. Streets and squares are jammed. Access roads and parking lots are blocked. Which is why I am sticking to my house, as I imagine many others in Motovun are doing at this very moment. It is early afternoon, and I cringe at the thought of leaving my burrow. By the evening, the town will become deserted again, and I will venture out to see the familiar faces once again. We will console each other in no time, I am sure. Although the tourist season is almost upon us, we still have a month or so to adjust.
