IN PRAISE OF TRACEY EMIN: A LETTER TO THE JACKDAW (January 7, 2007)

Tracey Emin’s pithy description of the Venice Biennale from The Independent, which you reproduce in a banner in your News Section (No. 64, December 2006-January 2007), is truly delightful. As the British representative in the event later this year, she hits the nail on the head. “It’s the World Cup of art,” she says, “and I am your British team!” How apt. And she adds: “It’s a fucking big deal!” That sizes it up pretty exactly. “It’s a sort of nationalism in a really sweet way,” she concludes. Spot on. In spite of her many detractors, the old girl has a way with words. What better representative in Venice could Britain ever get? Give them hell, Tracey!
