NEGRO ESPERANZA (March 21, 2007)
As I am working on a new painting, my eye chances upon the label on a plastic container of acrylic paint produced by Daler-Rowney in Bracknell, Berkshire. I brought it to Motovun from Reading, which is not far from Bracknell. Anyhow, the name of the color appears in four languages: English, French, German, and Spanish. But the variety of meanings attached to the color is simply stunning: Process Black. Noir primaire, Normalschwarz, and Negro esperanza. And all this for straight, honest, simple, no-nonsense black! The Spanish name takes the prize, though. It takes quite a few twists and turns of an entire culture to associate black color with nothing less than hope. Ouch!
