STORING UP (January 5, 2007)
A curious thing has been happening the last three or four days: an ever-larger number of people can be found at Klaudio’s. Both in the morning and in the evening, the number of people has suddenly doubled. And maybe even tripled. In addition, they are a bit friendlier than usual, too. What has prompted such an abrupt change in people’s behavior? Why are they getting so much more sociable at this particular time? In my opinion, the answer is quite simple: the people are aware of the fact that every watering hole in Motovun, including Klaudio’s, will soon be closed. They are socializing now so as to compensate for their inability to socialize later. As it were, they are storing up all the social contacts they know they will be missing soon. And sorely. If I am not mistaken, Klaudio’s will be crowded this Sunday evening, the last occasion for people to meet before the café is locked for a couple of weeks. As for me, I would not miss that merry evening for anything in the world.
