THE SHADES (June 15, 2007)

The oversized shades that young women are fond of wearing nowadays have never been to my liking. They hide too much of the face, I have always thought. But no longer. Now I realize that I have been wrong all along, for there is nothing more bewildering—nay, frightening—than seeing one of those young women take the blessed shades off. Behind them, there hide vacant eyes and sallow cheeks that are best kept out of sight. In fact, the larger the shades, the better. Come to think of it, they hide too little. What would be wrong with well-shaped helmets?!
