THE SUN’S PROGRESS (March 2, 2007)
The sun’s big steps always delight me this time of year. It travels across the horizon ever faster until the spring equinox, and then it starts slowing down. By the time it is close to the summer solstice, it slows down to a crawl. And then the whole thing repeats itself in reverse. But these big steps are truly elating. Every day the sun sets father north than even a careful observer would guess. It jogs. It races. It leaps like a star demented. When I only remember that I had no idea about the sun’s progress before I moved to Motovun! The only thing I knew was that it rose in the east and set in the west. Period.
