THE WINDFALL (March 5, 2007)
Like many others in Motovun, Eni Nurkollari prefers to roll his own cigarettes rather than smoke factory-made ones. A while ago he bought several packages of tobacco, which turned out to be of the wrong kind. To his disappointment, it was for the pipe. Coarsely cut, it was useless for his purposes. When he mentioned his mistake at Klaudio’s, Miro Kopčalić and I were quite happy to relieve him of the wrong tobacco. And so I pulled my pipe out of its retirement. At least temporarily, for I am quite eager to stop using it altogether. Everything has gone smoothly for several weeks, and I have quite enjoyed smoking a few pipes a day, but the tobacco is almost gone by now. I have slowed down considerably, but the remainder of the windfall will not last me more than a couple of days no matter how much more I manage to slow down. Thus I relish the pipe ever more. And I keep convincing myself that the next retirement of my pipe will be its very last. As though I could never get rid of it altogether.
