LIKE AN INTERESTING PERSON (March 17, 2008)

This morning I was surprised by a message from my daughter, the first in about six months. “I was reading Residua today,” she said. “It made me want to talk to you. You sound like an interesting person.” But then she admitted that she did not remember me very well. “I am glad I sound like an interesting person,” I replied at once. “As you can guess from what you have read, I am far from modest. And so I can say that it is quite likely that you will not find a person more interesting than me.” The last time we saw each other was five years ago, when she was seven. Of course, she could not possibly remember me well. “But we can learn a great deal about each other by writing and reading,” I pushed my luck a bit. “One fine day you will come to visit me, too,” I concluded fearlessly. Let us keep our fingers crossed.
