HUNDRED, THOUSAND (August 31, 2008)

Vladan Jovanovich or Vlad, as he is known in London’s City, knows a great deal about computers and computer networks of all kinds. When I told him that someone must have blocked Google from finding several pages on my Residua website, he screwed up his face and shook his head vigorously: “It’s hard to fool around with Google.” And then he squinted at me: “Most likely someone has tampered with the source code on your own pages, and thus made Google unable to find them.” I had hard time understanding him at first, but he was patient enough to explain that the problem was with my site, which had not been properly protected. “You must make your source code ‘read only’,” he grinned at me. But then he went for the jugular: “It’s a hundred times more difficult to protect a site than to build it.” Having said that, he waved his hand in disgust: “A hundred times? Make that a thousand times, instead!”
