THE POSTCARD FOLDER (March 13, 2008)
Next to the Residua folder on my computer desktop there is a folder entitled “Postcards.” For more than a decade, I would grab a piece just written in one of the files in the former, paste it in one or more files in the latter, print everything out, paste it onto one or more postcards, and walk to the post office. In my heyday, I would produce hundreds of postcards each and every day. The postcard folder contained several hundred formatted files with addresses of my many friends and acquaintances. The spread of the Internet has changed all that. By and by, the real postcards were replaced by virtual ones, which would go via electronic mail to a list of closest friends around the globe. Although a few friends would still receive flesh-and-bone postcards, their number gradually shrunk. As of the last few months, the postcard folder has been lying idle, though. I rarely even look at it. Ever since I have started pasting everything I write directly on the Internet, the folder has become rather useless. Its place on the desktop has become tenuous. But it just crossed my mind that I should return to it, and in earnest. It still has an important rôle to play, albeit a slightly different one. What quainter way to advertise my Residua website far and wide than by the antiquated postcard?!
