THE SISTERS (March 29, 2008)
I am having a few last puffs at a cigar before going to sleep when I hear faint steps coming down Borgo. Without paying any attention to the sound, I can tell there are two sets of steps. They come closer. And then they fade away. I am startled. It is as though the twain flew past my house. Without much thought, I realise who they were: Silvia and Sara Ujčić. Slim and lanky, the sisters are about five or six years apart. Together with their parents, they live half way down Borgo. Only then I remember that I saw them at the bar at Klaudio’s when I left the café half-an-hour ago. Out of the blue, I grin in delight at my intimate knowledge of this tiny town.
