THE SIZE OF OUR TOIL (March 14, 2008)
The garden under my house is irregular in shape. Oriented toward the west, just like the house itself, it is wider in the south than in the north. Now that the planting season is upon us, my beloved and I decided to measure it. Knowing the garden’s dimensions will help us plan how much of what to plant. And where. According to our measurements, the useful part of the garden is fourteen meters in length. This excludes the stairs on both sides, as well as a patch to the south, which is already taken by several rose bushes. They miraculously survived my neglect. To the south, the garden is a bit more than six meters wide, and it is a bit less than four meters wide to the north. On the average, that is about five meters in width. So, the area of the garden is about fourteen times five meters, or seventy square meters all told. We are still pretty naïve about gardening, our new-found delight, but the size of our toil is perfectly clear to us now.
