“ASPIRIN AND A STIFF UPPER LIP ARE BEST REMEDIES FOR A BROKEN HEART” (September 25, 2014)

Thus The Guardian today. “Instead of brooding over a failed relationship, psychologist advises a couple of aspirin and distancing oneself from the event,” elaborates the newspaper. A certain Walter Mischel is the psychologist in question. Apparently, he rose to fame in the Sixties. According to the article, he studied the beneficial effects of delayed gratification at Stanford University. By the way, the painkiller comes into the story because Mischel argues that a broken heart is not just a metaphor, for the emotional pain hurts in a physical way, as well. Be that as it may, the article made me smile. Failed or not, my relationship with my beloved is certainly in trouble. And I resorted to aspirin without any delay. As for delayed gratification, time will tell. The best way to prepare for it is to distance myself from the event not only emotionally, but also physically. As luck would have it, Zagreb and Motovun are far from close to each other. Many thanks, Mischel!
