PARALLELIZING (September 17, 2014)

I found a small scorpion in the bathroom sink this morning. Where did it come from? This time of year, they can usually be found in the basement, where there are damp spots they look for. It cannot possibly get inside the water pipe, which means that it has crawled up the pipe from the outside. There must be crevices wide enough for it to squeeze through unmolested. Any other path would be too cumbersome and too hazardous for it, I guess. But it is amazing to see how two creatures of this planet manage to cohabit the very same place. Its world and my world are so different, though. It knows so much that I can only surmise, as well as the other way around. The same holds for spiders, centipedes, and ants that can be found in my house. Each of them inhabits a parallel world that rarely crosses my own. If I add microorganisms to the story, the number of such worlds boggles the mind. This trick of Mother Nature works most of the time. Parallelizing, as it were. For better or worse, parallel worlds do cross from time to time. Bye-bye, scorpion!
