PEOPLE’S CLIMATE MARCH (September 20, 2014)

Tomorrow is a momentous day for us all. A march to save the earth will take place in New York City. Its organizers call it history making, no less. Many so-called leading personalities from all over the world will be there. The march will precede the summit of heads of state at the United Nations, which will take place two days later. To mark the worthy occasion, the equinox has been selected for symbolic reasons. The double event is meant to alert everyone around the globe of the horrors to come if something is not done to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases as soon as possible. Assuming that anything could be done to stop climate change at this stage, it goes without saying. Given the inanity of that assumption, the vaunted march and world summit are sure to get nowhere. It will be fun in New York City, though. Everyone who is anyone will be there. The social media will be abuzz with their pretty faces and heartfelt pronouncements. Many people, and especially the leading personalities, will get a feeling that they have done something of importance to save the earth. And that will be that. They will return home in vain hope that momentous changes will follow without delay. At best, the assembled heads of state will agree on some cockamamie emission targets for greenhouse gases that are beyond their power to implement. People’s climate march, my ass.
