THE COCKROACH TOTEM (September 13, 2014)

Out of the blue, I went to my laptop, opened it, and googled “cockroach totem.” When I opened the page that came on top of search results, of which there were more than fifty-thousand, I saw a realistic depiction of a cockroach and some text underneath it. “The cockroach teaches us how to use what we have available to us for survival,” I started reading. “When the cockroach appears as a totem, our sensitivity to subtle changes will be magnified.” I was quite pleased with what I read. “Although often seen as a disgusting animal, the cockroach is actually a gifted teacher in the art of survival and successful adaptability, especially in environments that may seem a bit hostile.” Having had my fill, I stopped reading, left the page, and closed my laptop. I did not even check the rest of the website that was dedicated to animal totems. A smile sprouted on my lips. Indeed, I am more than happy with my totem, which appeared in my life quite unexpectedly (“My Totem,” November 12, 2012). And I appreciate the art of survival more than any other art. Feeling chipper, I decided to take a brisk walk.
