YOO-HOO! (September 27, 2014)

Saša Juvan takes quite a number of people on paragliding tours of Motovun. They are perched in front and slightly below him, so that he can maneuver around the hilltown’s many peaks without a glitch. As I sit on my terrace, I often hear one of his passengers bellowing on takeoff from the launching area just under the lower square: “Yoo-hoo!” No matter where they come from, they all sound pretty much the same. The fear of ending up in the woods below and the exhilaration of takeoff entice them to bellow on top of their voices. It is an instinctual response to powerful emotions, no doubt. But what is its root? To attract attention, no doubt. If anything goes wrong, someone should hurry to help; and if everything goes according to plan, everyone should look in envy. Sitting on my terrace, I look up the hill to my right. A moment later, the wing carrying the paragliding pair comes in view. Interestingly, the bellow is never followed by another one. The first takeoff is one and only. Which makes me rather happy on my terrace.
